Experimenting with scale, proportion, and color, in this fairy tale portrait Alice is standing in the Red Queen’s garden. The monarch is outraged after learning her gardeners had mistakenly planted white roses and were trying to fool her by painting them red. She calls for their beheading, but then Alice steps up to defend them. This is the moment that Queen points at Alice and screams, “Off with her head!” as the scarlet paint continues to drip from the flowers.
